Moving Night

The World Gymnaestrada is the largest general gymnastics exhibition. It is held every four years much like the Olympics. But the focus of this event is not on winning medals. The Gymnaestrada is about Group Performances – some with hundreds or even thousands of participants. Adults and children of every age and description perform. Countries from around the world come together to showcase their talent and the culture of their various countries. The choreography is designed both to challenge the participants and to delight audiences. Routines are performed at various venues within the host country.

At the German evening the best groups of Germany present themselves in an almost two-hours show. We were assigned with the staging and the choreographies. In a casting we chose 330 gymnasts after examining numerous sample video applications.

With a red thread we perform the whole creation in accordance with the title and motto “Moving Night“. Two protagonists, a man and a woman separately experience a trip through an extraordinary night. Like in a fantasy world they meet bizarre and weird figures. They are acting in varied choreographies we have worked out with the different sports groups. There were the most different performances concerning night phenomenons which are staged acrobatically and in terms of dance. From vampires to devils, fireflies and gremlins. In the end the sleepwalking protagonists meet in an encounter with the dream figures. Movement is the binding element, doing gymnastics turns to performing arts.
